Irishman With GAA Links Played A Pivotal Role In Arsenal's Title Win

Arsenal have won the Premier League for the first time since 2004, and an Irishman played an important role in delivering the title to the Emirates.

The Gunners are a club with a great pedigree of Irish players, with the likes of Liam Brady, David O'Leary, and Katie McCabe all club legends in North London.

However, Dubliner Eoin Clarkin has played a pivotal role off the pitch.

Clarkin is Arsenal's Lead Rehabilitation Strength and Conditioning Coach, a role he has held since September 2023.

However, he has been at the club since 2019 and has an intriguing list of previous roles across multiple Irish sports and teams.

Dundalk man helps Arsenal win title

Dubliner Eoin Clarkin is a Premier League champion with Arsenal.

Clarkin arrived in North London from Dundalk FC in 2019, having been recruited by Galway man Des Ryan, the then-head of strength and conditioning at Arsenal.

In a 2020 interview with Daniel McDonnell of the Irish Independent, Clarkin explained how Ryan had helped him through the interview process at the club.

"Des asked me if I would be interested in interviewing. I said I would but I saw myself staying in Dundalk," Clarkin said.

But I got through the first round, and then the second round and then I was offered the job. It wasn't an easy decision. It definitely turned my head.

With my age and profile and the time I was at in my career, I wanted to take a shot at England and see the opportunities. I couldn't say no, but I felt gutted to leave because I still wanted to explore more parts of the Dundalk journey. I didn't want to leave home, but I haven't looked back since.

He certainly has not, working with the Arsenal first team en route to a historic Premier League title.

His initial role was as Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach, and he transitioned to the role of Lead Rehabilitation Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2023.

Before arriving in North London, Clarkin spent a year with Dundalk under Stephen Kenny, and he would combine the first few years of his Arsenal position with a similar role under Jim Crawford with the Ireland U21s.

Clarkin's journey began with underage coaching roles at the FAI and Cherry Orchard, before becoming Head of Strength and Conditioning and Sports Science at UCD's League of Ireland football team.

It was there that he remained until the move to Dundalk, though he would combine that role with the same position with Kilmacud Crokes' senior footballers from 2016 to 2018.

Crokes won the Dublin SFC in 2018, shortly after Clarkin departed from his role.

With his role centred around rehabilitation, Clarkin has played an important role in Arsenal's triumph, with players like Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard recovering from lengthy injury layoffs to help Arsenal across the line.

It is only fitting that a club such as Arsenal, with such a long history of Irish players, should have an Irishman play a pivotal part in delivering their first Premier League title in 22 years.

Congratulations to Eoin Clarkin.
