Club social media posts congratulating Arsenal irks MK Dons fans

The post caused controversy amongst fans after Manchester City’s draw with Bournemouth

A social media post congratulating Premier League champions Arsenal has drawn irk and ire on MK Dons’ social media channels.

Following the Gunners’ first league crown in 22-years, coming as a result of Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last night (Tuesday) Dons posted across Facebook, Instagram and X their congratulations to the north London side. The posts though have caused controversy amongst their own supporters.

Aside from Arsenal themselves, none of the other 90 professional clubs in the country made note of the achievement.

The sides have never officially crossed paths on the pitch, however Arsenal visited Stadium MK in 2020 for a behind-closed-doors pre-season game during Covid, while their U21s were beaten on penalties by Dons in the EFL Trophy on 2024.

Dons have several known fans of Arsenal in their squad, including captain Alex Gilbey, midfielder Kane Thompson-Sommers and forward Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, while owner Fahad Al Ghanim is also known to be a fan of the Gunners.

The posts on the club’s official accounts though have drawn criticism from the Dons fanbase. The post on X received more than 300 comments, with fans calling for the post to be deleted, while one posted ‘we don’t help ourselves do we’ underneath. It also drew backlash and mockery from supporters of other clubs.

On Instagram, many questioned why the club had posted the message, others questioned whether the account had been hacked, and one asked where the congratulations to other league winners, such as Coventry City and Lincoln City was.

On Instagram, captain Gilbey commented on the post calling it ‘the best season ever’ and joked he would hand the account’s passwords back in the morning.
