Man City‘Lead’Race For£35M Rated Right-Back As Maresca Lines Up 1st Signing

Man City are in pole position to snap up Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra, according to reports in the Italian media.

Il Giorno (via FcInter1908.it) claim that the Cityzens are “in the lead” to sign the defender, who has impressed out on loan at Cagliari this season.

Other Premier League clubs have been credited with an interest in Palestra, including Arsenal, while Serie A champions Inter Milan would be keen on securing his services too.

However, the Nerazzurri won’t get involved in any battle for the Italian international, unless they sell Denzel Dumfries before the end of the transfer window, which should give City an opening to wrap up a deal.

Palestra’s asking price has been set

Despite sending the fullback out on loan last summer, Atalanta believe that the player is worth around €40m (£35m).

Director of Football Hugo Viana is unlikely to be put off by that valuation, and Palestra plays in an area of the pitch that City could do with strengthening ahead of next season.

Midfielder Matheus Nunes has performed ably despite being deployed out of position, but it is felt that a more natural right-back is needed.

Could he be Maresca’s first signing for Man City?

Pep Guardiola’s departure is expected to be announced over the coming days, with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca lined up as his replacement.

While Viana does lead transfer negotiations, it would be a surprise if Maresca hasn’t, at the very least, been consulted about the club’s plans for the summer.

As a fellow Italian, Maresca is likely to be aware of Palestra’s talents, so there is a chance that the 21-year-old could be the first name through the door following the change in the dugout.
