Journo reveals Enzo Fernandez has told Chelsea to sign Tottenham’s €50m star – ‘Wants to see…

The Tottenham star is currently nursing a knee ligament issue.

It is widely believed that Cristian Romero has played his last game in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt.

The Spurs captain suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 away defeat to Sunderland in April and has been subsequently ruled out for the rest of the campaign. Fortunately, he has escaped surgery, which could have seen him miss out on the summer’s World Cup. He has been selected by the Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni for the World Cup starting in June.

The knee ligament injury suffered against Sunderland was a big blow for the €50m Cristian Romero, who would have wanted to be a part of the Tottenham side battling relegation. Well, the injury hasn’t stopped speculation surrounding the 27-year-old’s future in N17. He continues to attract interest from several clubs across Europe.

Romero has been on the radar of Atletico Madrid since 2025. The Spanish club have revived their interest in the defender, while Manchester United continue to monitor his situation at Tottenham. Now, there could be a new entrant in the race to sign the Argentina international.

Enzo Fernandez requests the Chelsea board to sign Cristian Romero

According to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, Enzo Fernandez has told the Chelsea hierarchy to sign Romero from Spurs in the summer.

“Our sources heard that Fernandez recently had new conversations with the club over a new contract, but nothing was agreed at this point, Simon Phillips said on Substack.

“In these conversations, Fernandez told the club to sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham and wants to see more top players come in.”

Enzo Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in February 2023 for a then-British record £106.8m. The Argentine, who won the 2022 World Cup alongside Romero, has not really managed to justify his hefty price tag. Yet, he has been one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign, and enhanced his reputation further as a coveted central midfielder with a fantastic long-range strike in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Tuesday evening.

The diminutive South American continues to be linked away from Stamford Bridge ahead of the summer transfer window. It is understood that Fernandez has been demanding a new contract from the club. In recent talks with the owners over a new deal, he seems to have demanded them to make a move for his Argentine teammate.

Tottenham open to offers for Romero

Romero is a player who has been central to the club’s defensive identity, and he was rightly handed a new contract last August. While Spurs were expected to build on their Europa League, it has turned out to be a disastrous season.

With Tottenham failing to live up to his ambitions and fighting relegation, the World Cup winner understandably wants to leave. And reports suggest Tottenham’s leadership are now open to listening to offers for their defensive lynchpin, who was once considered untouchable. However, it is unlikely they will sanction Romero’s sale to Chelsea.

Spurs and Chelsea share a heated rivalry, both on the pitch and off it. Even if the Blues come knocking on the door following Fernandez’s request, it is very unlikely to see our board sell the skipper to one of our direct and bitter rivals.
