Why Barcelona may not be able to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea despite interest

Barcelona are one club who are keen on signing Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer.

One football agent has even claimed that there is a “1000%” chance of Cucurella joining Barcelona or Atletico Madrid in the next transfer window.

However, regardless of how much they want the defender, the Catalan club may not be in a position to sign him this year.

Robert Lewandowski replacement likely to take up most of Barcelona’s transfer budget

In Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona are about to lose one of the best No.9s in the world. Replacing him is not going to be cheap.

In fact, according to Sky Sports, while Barcelona are interested in signing Cucurella, they plan to turn Joao Cancelo’s loan spell from Al-Hilal into a permanent transfer instead.

The report states that Barcelona need to allocate their funds into signing a replacement for Lewandowski.

That could prove tricky if they have to use half of it on Cucurella, so it appears that Cancelo is seen as a cheaper alternative. The Portuguese is a right-back but can play as a left-back and has done so at the Catalan club this season.

Chelsea paid around £60m for Cucurella, so it is unlikely that they will sell the 27-year-old to Barcelona on the cheap.

Chelsea should keep Marc Cucurella and try to sign Robert Lewandowski

Cucurella has not had the best season, much like the majority of his teammates. However, in the previous campaign, he was easily one of the top left-backs in the world. Instead of allowing the Spain international to join Barcelona, Chelsea should retain him while making a move for Lewandowski.

Lewandowski is also one of the best players in his position, perhaps the best, and would bring goals and experience to this Chelsea side.

The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund man is 37 now and has scored 18 goals this term. He is exactly what Chelsea need and what they have lacked in the current campaign.
