Thomas Tuchel strongly considering surprise defender for England World Cup squad

Thomas Tuchel is considering calling Chelsea defender Levi Colwill up to his England squad for the 2026 World Cup, talkSPORT understands.

Colwill has made just three competitive appearances for the Blues this season having suffered a serious ACL injury on the eve of the campaign.

The young defender returned to training two months ago, but only registered his first minutes of the campaign at the start of May.

The 23-year-old played the second half of Chelsea's 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

Colwill then started the 1-1 draw at Liverpool and the 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City before dropping out of the XI for the 2-1 win over Tottenham on Tuesday.

However, despite a lack of game time in the Chelsea shirt this season, Colwill appears to have proven his fitness ahead of the World Cup.

The Blues centre-back has impressed Tuchel, who was in attendance for the FA Cup final at Wembley last weekend.

With Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi already guaranteed an England spot, injury permitting, Colwill's inclusion leaves the likes of Harry Maguire and Dan Burn sweating on a spot in Tuchel's squad.

'You know nothing, John Stones'

Tuchel also has a decision to make on John Stones, who has endured another injury-hit campaign.

Stones will leave FA and EFL Cup winners Manchester City this summer, with a move to Bayern Munich a possibility.

The 31-year-old has been restricted to just four league starts this season but has been a tournament regular for the Three Lions having started all seven matches during England's Euro 2024 campaign.

At left-back, Lewis Hall is also expected to make the cut with Nico O'Reilly set to be first choice in the role in North America.

Goalkeepers union

Between the sticks, talkSPORT understands that Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford will make up the trio of goalkeepers this summer, this despite the latter struggling for regular minutes at City following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Experienced Brighton man Jason Steele will tag along as a training 'keeper on the other side of the Atlantic.

Henderson, meanwhile, will be allowed to report for duty later than most of the rest of the squad owing to Crystal Palace's participation in the UEFA Conference League final.

The Eagles face Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig next week and they'll look to emulate Aston Villa, who eased to a 3-0 Europa League win over Freiburg on Wednesday night.

Further forward, Anthony Gordon, who like Stones has also been linked with a switch to Bayern Munich, is set to secure a spot on the plane.

Gordon hasn't featured for Newcastle since their 2-1 defeat to Palace last month and has been an unused sub in the Magpies' last three matches.

Dat Guy?

Brighton hitman Danny Welbeck is another who is pushing for a spot in the World Cup squad.

As talkSPORT reported last month, the Seagulls star was part of Tuchel's 55-man longlist and there is a chance that Welbeck is called up eight years after winning his last cap.

The 13-goal forward does face competition for a place as Harry Kane's deputy from Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins.

Watkins was overlooked by Tuchel for the March internationals, but has been in flying form for the Villans of late.

Since the start of March, the Villa frontman has scored 11 goals and provided an additional four assists across 16 appearances.

When will the England squad be announced?

Tuchel's 26-man England squad for the 2026 World Cup will be announced on Friday, 22 May.
