Enzo Fernandez is someone whose own future at Chelsea remains up in the air. The Argentine is believed to be seeking a new contract. Obviously, he wants a bigger salary. But at the same time, just handing him that might not be enough. The World Cup winner might even be looking for assurances that his sporting ambitions can be met at Stamford Bridge amid interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Based on form, Fernandez is Chelsea’s best player. And with Xabi Alonso set to come in, it would be a misstep to part ways with the star Argentine midfielder. That would send the wrong message ahead of what should be a rebuild to get the club back to the top.
Chelsea are believed to have held talks with Fernandez recently. No agreement has been reached yet. But during these conversations, the midfielder reportedly urged the club to sign one of his Argentine teammates from Tottenham Hotspur.
According to TEAMtalk, journalist Simon Phillips wrote:
“Our sources heard that Fernandez recently had new conversations with the club over a new contract, but nothing was agreed at this point.
“In these conversations, Fernandez told the club to sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham and wants to see more top players come in.”
Enzo Fernandez wants Chelsea to sign Argentine teammate from Tottenham
Of course, players have rarely made the move from Tottenham to Chelsea in recent times. But if they end up getting relegated, which is still possible, going into the final day of the Premier League campaign, then signing their best talents would become a lot more easier.
Chelsea have been linked with one of their other centre-backs already in the form of Micky van de Ven. But it looks like it is Romero who Fernandez prefers, and understandably so, having won a World Cup together.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Tottenham with regards to relegation. A move for any of their players will probably depend on that factor.
Chelsea could look to sign players from relegated teams
It is no secret that Chelsea will be looking to sign a centre-back or two this summer. Could Romero be one of them? He is not a name that has been linked with the club so far. But it could be possible.
If Tottenham do not end up getting relegated, West Ham United will. And Chelsea are already being heavily linked with Jarrod Bowen.
So, no matter who ends up getting relegated, expect Chelsea to be making a move for their players this summer. Obviously, there is going to be a decent bit of talent out there. But other clubs will be providing some serious competition as well. Everybody loves a good bargain signing.
