Inter Milan now want to sign experienced Arsenal star to replace 37-year-old

Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan are interested in signing Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga as a replacement for outgoing Yann Sommer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Nerazzurri have had Sommer as their number one for the past three years, but the 37-year-old will leave the club this summer, with the hierarchy having decided against renewing his contract beyond June.

Inter consider Josep Martinez as a potential first-choice goalkeeper for the future, but they are determined to bring in an experienced competitor and have earmarked Arrizabalaga as a top target for the next transfer window.

Arsenal could contemplate parting ways with Arrizabalaga

The 31-year-old signed for the Gunners from Chelsea last summer after his £5 million release clause was triggered.

He has made 11 appearances as a backup goalkeeper behind David Raya, keeping four clean sheets. The Spaniard has had a decent season, but his blunder in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City remains an unforgettable moment.

Arrizabalaga went on to start the FA Cup quarter-final at Southampton, where they were eliminated 2-1. His only appearance since came in a dead-rubber Champions League game against Kairat Almaty at home.

The former Blues man could make his Gunners league debut against Crystal Palace on Sunday, but there is a possibility that the club could contemplate bringing in a younger backup during the summer transfer window.

Arrizabalaga could also be tempted to move on after a solitary season if he has the guarantee of regular playing time. He could get exactly that at Inter, who want an experienced campaigner to take over from Sommer.

As things stand, the Gunners have not been linked with any goalkeeper. They may only part ways with Arrizabalaga if they can find a young shot-stopper prepared to play second fiddle to Raya between the sticks.
