Speculation has begun to quietly circulate around Joao Pedro’s long-term future at Chelsea following a fresh update regarding interest from Barcelona.
Despite an outstanding, 20-goal debut campaign that earned him Chelsea‘s Player of the Season award, Joao Pedro has endured a terrible week. He suffered the ultimate heartbreak when Carlo Ancelotti omitted him from Brazil’s final 2026 World Cup squad in favour of a returning Neymar, and failed to even give a proper explanation for the decision.
Elsewhere, Barcelona have identified the Brazilian as the ideal long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, with sporting director Deco holding exploratory talks in London.
However, there’s no indication to suggest that he’ll be leaving, with Xabi Alonso arriving in July offering a clean slate for Pedro and every single Chelsea player.

Joao Pedro won’t force a Chelsea exit this summer
According to TeamTalk, those close to Joao Pedro have indicated that he would be open to the prospect of joining Barcelona if the opportunity ever materialised.
However, the important thing for Chelsea is that the Brazilian has not actively pushed for a move or attempted to instigate interest himself.
This comes after rumours in Spain suggested that Pedro is about to tell Alonso that he doesn’t want to be at Stamford Bridge anymore.

How realistic is Joao Pedro’s exit?
The reality remains that Barcelona’s precarious financial situation makes any potential pursuit of Joao Pedro an almost impossible mission this summer. Trapped by La Liga’s strict spending controls, the Catalan giants are entirely unable to realistically finance or even register a blockbuster.
Because Pedro only arrived at Stamford Bridge last year and is firmly under contract until 2033, Chelsea holds every single card.
So despite the superficial noise out of Spain, Pedro’s immediate future is locked down in London, where he remains a fundamental, indispensable part of Xabi Alonso’s long-term project.
