Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football.
The 36-year-old Spaniard confirmed his decision via a post on X, bringing an end to a distinguished two-decade career.
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea in 2012, becoming a stalwart at Stamford Bridge for 11 years. He amassed 508 appearances, securing two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, and two Europa League trophies.
He famously captained the side to their 2021 Champions League triumph, cementing his legendary status among the Blues faithful.
His career began at Osasuna back in 2006, before he moved to Marseille where he secured two French League Cups and a French Super Cup.

Following his illustrious spell in London, Azpilicueta spent two seasons at Atletico Madrid, then joined Sevilla last summer, making 16 La Liga appearances this term. He also earned 44 caps for the Spanish national team.
In a heartfelt message posted on X, Azpilicueta stated: "Dear football. Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.
“Being honest, even though I have been preparing myself for this moment, I found it hard to write this letter. After 20 seasons, many people have played an important role in my career."
Reflecting on his journey, he expressed profound gratitude: "When I first kicked a ball as a child in Pamplona with my schoolmates, I never imagined the amazing journey ahead. I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way."
He concluded by thanking teammates, coaches, and staff, adding that "wearing the shirts of Osasuna, Marseille, Chelsea, Atletico de Madrid, Sevilla, and representing my country at the biggest stages has been a true privilege. Every moment has meant so much to me."
Azpilicueta will be back on UK television screens in just a matter of weeks as he has been named as a BBC pundit for the upcoming World Cup alongside former Chelsea teammate Olivier Giroud.
