Chelsea have been handed a major boost after Reece James celebrated his inclusion in England’s 2026 World Cup squad, with a positive update on his injury situation.
After a grueling, nearly two-month absence due to a recurring hamstring injury, Reece James made a highly anticipated return to play 83 minutes of the FA Cup final.
Unsurprisingly, his fragile workload had to be managed strictly by interim Chelsea coach Calum McFarlane, who left him out of the midweek victory over Tottenham Hotspur to ensure a safe recovery.
Fortunately, some positive news arrived when Thomas Tuchel officially named James in England’s 2026 World Cup squad, indicating the national team expects him to be their starting right-back.
With his international spot secure, it looks as if Blues fans will get to see him on the final day.

Reece James set for return against Sunderland
Calum McFarlane gave an update on Reece James’ injury situation, which resulted in some positive news, as the defender is set to feature against Sunderland.
“Reece has trained today. We’ll play it day by day with Reece. He’s fit and in good condition but we know we need to manage him carefully. He played a lot of minutes in the final – and that will take it out of you.”
This weekend’s clash with Sunderland could be of huge importance, with a loss costing them a place in Europe and a win guaranteeing either a Conference League or Europa League place.

Reece James’ experience is invaluable for England
Reece James remains a key figure to England because he is arguably the most complete right-back in world football when healthy.
He possesses the rare physicality to pocket the most dangerous of wingers in isolated 1v1 situations, yet his pinpoint crossing ability makes him an immediate weapon in transition.
Crucially, his flexibility allows him to slot seamlessly into a traditional back four or dominate as a robust wing-back.
So, for a high-stakes tournament like the World Cup, his defensive leadership is irreplaceable.
