Manchester City midfielder's stance on Sheffield United move outlined as wages claim emerges -…

The reported stance of Leeds United hero and current Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips amid talk of a Sheffield United return

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is reportedly ready to accept a huge pay cut to grease the wheels for a return to Sheffield United.

The 30-year-old spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at Bramall Lane, but was limited to just three outings by injury.

Kalvin Phillips ‘ready’ to grease wheels for Sheffield United move

According to SportsBoom, the former Leeds United star is willing to take the hit of a huge salary reduction in order to facilitate a return to Sheffield United.

The report has suggested Blades boss Chris Wilder is determined to get Phillips back on board in what looks set to be a summer of change in South Yorkshire.

It has also mooted the possibility of a permanent deal being agreed, despite reports elsewhere indicating a loan agreement will be pursued.

Space in the midfield deparment at Bramall Lane has been freed up by the departures of Tom Davies and Jairo Riedewald. The latter was expected to stay before the Blades announced he would be moving on with the publication of their retained list.

Kalvin Philips in need of career revival

Regardless of the type of deal done, the return of Phillips to Bramall Lane would most likely divide opinion. While undoubtedly a classy operator on his day, fans could be forgiven for having reservations over his injury record.

For Phillips, a return to Sheffield United could spell the beginning of a career revival. An upturn in fortunes is something the England-capped man is determined to enjoy, as he made clear after his loan switch in January.

He told Sky Sports: “Any player that's been in my situation, I think first and foremost they'll come out and say not playing has been the major reason for them maybe having a dip in their career or whatever.

“And I just feel like staying idle, so many players have done it, where they've stayed at the club for so long and not played. And then their careers have fizzled out. I didn't want that to happen.

“I still feel like I've still got some life in me. I've still got some football in me to play, and I'm looking forward to the next three or four years.”

Kalvin Phillips’ career path

Phillips ascended the youth ranks of his boyhood club Leeds, making his first-team debut as a teenager in May 2015. He went on to make over 200 appearances for the Whites, notably helping the club clinch the Championship title in 2020.

Premier League prominence and England call-ups followed but a £45m move to Manchester City in 2022 brought his development to a grinding halt.

Prior to being loaned to Sheffield United, the all-action midfielder had spent time on loan at West Ham United and Ipswich Town.
