Liverpool are working on a deal to further bolster their Academy ranks by signing highly-rated Colombia teenager Samuel Martinez.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder was part of the Colombia side that won the South American U17 Championships last month in Paraguay, claiming an assist in both the semi-final against Brazil and final win over Argentina.

Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund were among a number of high-profile clubs courting the signature of the Atletico Nacional youngster.

But now Liverpool are close to finalising a transfer, with reports in South America claiming the fee will be around €1million (£860,000) with the player signing a five-year contract when he turns 18 next April.

Atletico Nacional are also expected to negotiate a percentage of any future sale of the player should he complete a move to Liverpool.

Liverpool have in recent years signed players specifically to raise the levels at the Academy, with Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni, both of whom have had first-team experience this season, notable examples.
