Man United Scout Chelsea Defender Josh Acheampong: Reports

Manchester United have reportedly added Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong to their scouting list. The 20-year-old has emerged as a potential target, despite the Blues’ firm public stance against parting ways with the academy graduate. Chelsea have repeatedly insisted Acheampong is not for sale. However, fresh indications suggest the player himself will be open to offers if he is not assured of regular minutes under incoming manager Xabi Alonso.

The Waltham Forest-born defender, who can operate at centre-back, right-back, or left-back, signed an improved four-and-a-half-year deal that ties him to Stamford Bridge until June 2029. Acheampong, who is 1.90 metres tall, has played just 572 minutes of Premier League football this season in 12 games, seven of those from the start, despite his obvious versatility.

The young Englishman himself hinted at his future last summer when Chelsea were in the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup. He brushed aside speculation, while revealing his attachment to the club he joined as an Under-8:

“I don’t really look at it or think of my future. I just focus on my football. Enzo said he thinks I’m a good player. I love the club, so I always want to stay at Chelsea and just show what I can do.”

But whether that affection will survive a summer of upheaval is increasingly in doubt. United, who are regrouping under Michael Carrick after Ruben Amorim was sacked in January, are looking at several defensive profiles ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Acheampong’s versatility in defence has long been of interest to the Old Trafford recruitment team.

Chelsea Plot Move For New Starting Centre-Back As Alonso Prepares For Stamford Bridge Era

Chelsea will make the signing of a ball-playing centre-back a non-negotiable priority in Alonso’s first summer window as boss, with the Spaniard’s four-year contract officially commencing on July 1, 2026. Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande is one of the targets and has been labelled a perfect stylistic fit for Alonso’s possession-based system thanks to his athleticism and progressive passing.

Meanwhile, the Blues are reportedly exploring the possibility of a reunion between Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba. This is a centre-back with whom the Spaniard enjoyed a close relationship during their Bundesliga title-winning campaign. The Burkina Faso international, who stands at 1.94m (6ft 4in), only recently signed a long-term deal with Leverkusen until 2031. But the German club’s expected period of transition could provide an opportunity.

If any of these targets arrive, it would upset the pecking order at Stamford Bridge dramatically. Levi Colwill, who featured in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, is a defender Alonso can build around, but there are questions over the rotation behind him. This explains Chelsea’s desire to spend big but raises Acheampong’s worries about his path in west London.
