Going into this summer transfer window, Chelsea might have some tough decisions to make. The talk of Enzo Fernandez leaving the club is already growing. And there are those who believe that the Blues might be looking at it as a move that could help fund other signings, as the Argentine is one of the few players capable of drawing a significant fee, something that the likes of Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho and others simply won’t do.
That does not mean that Chelsea do not have other players who clubs across Europe would be interested in. But they do not seem open to a few exits.
One of them is Josh Acheampong. The lack of game time that the youngster has received has raised a lot of eyebrows. When given a run out, he has been solid. But somehow, he has gotten overlooked by every manager so far.
While speaking on The United Stand, Ben Jacobs mentioned Acheampong as an option for Manchester United and Man City. The journalist also states that the player is believed to be interested in exploring his options if he feels that he won’t be getting regular game time next season. But Chelsea continue to maintain their stance that he is not available for a transfer.
Josh Acheampong’s lack of game time has been confusing
Acheampong has long been considered a player who has world-class potential. When on the pitch, he has shown flashes of this quality as well. Yet, for one reason or another, he has not gotten a ton of chances.
Xabi Alonso, the incoming Chelsea boss, looks like the sort of manager who might enjoy getting the best out of Acheampong. But then, we had said the same about Liam Rosenior, and the youngster’s game time decreased under him.
One can only wonder what it is that leads to these calls. Is Acheampong someone who is not a great trainer? Or is picking a youngster at centre-back not a risk that managers are willing to take?
Chelsea cannot afford to lose Acheampong
Many believe that Chelsea allow Acheampong to leave, it would just be a repeat of the Lewis Hall story. The left-back was also thought to have world-class potential.
He left for Newcastle United early in his career. Today, he is considered by many as the best left-back in the Premier League.
That is the kind of ceiling that Acheampong has as well. So, Chelsea must give him assurances over his game time moving forward.
