Presidential candidate asked directly about Manchester City rumour – Pot stirring continues

Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquleme has responded to claims he intends to target Manchester City’s Erling Haaland if he is elected.

Sport cover comments from Riquelme today, after he as asked directly about a move for Haaland should he take charge at Real Madrid.

Presidential campaign

Enrique Riquelme, for those that don’t know, is intending to challenge Florentino Perez for the Real Madrid president this year.

He is currently formulating his candidacy, which will need to be ratified and approved by Saturday if he is to challenge president.

His current focus is on that, but reports in Spain are already linking him with big plans should he be successful in the potential election.

Manchester City targeted

Sport Witness covered one such report yesterday. It stated that Riquelme is looking to not only appoint Jurgen Klopp as manager but also sign Erling Haaland from Manchester City as well.

In fact, he and his team have reportedly been in contact with Haaland representatives to discuss the potential move.

Now, speaking at a Cox shareholder’s meeting (he’s president of the company), he’s been asked directly about those rumours. And he didn’t shy away from the idea of signing the Manchester City striker.

“That’s the juiciest part, after whether or not someone runs (in the elections),” he said.

“The best players have to be at Real Madrid. They always have been. The best always want to come; it’s the best club. That’s why we need a candidacy that brings back transparency and good governance to attract talent, so that talent wants to come.

“Talent has to want to come to Real Madrid. The greatest club in history has to have the best talent, and we have to provide the right conditions so that people feel comfortable within the club. Therefore, yes, of course, all the talent in the world will be welcome at Real Madrid.”
