Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri handed England World Cup role

Arsenal attacker Ethan Nwaneri will join England’s pre-World Cup camp in Florida next week. The Arsenal academy graduate spent the second half of the season on loan at Olympique de Marseille after failing to break into the team of Gunners manager Mikel Arteta at the Emirates Stadium club. Nwaneri also struggled to make an impact in the Ligue 1, scoring two goals in nine league matches. The Arsenal teenager could not do much in France after Roberto De Zerbi was sacked just days after he joined the club.

England manager Thomas Tuchel is a fan and Nwaneri will now join AFC Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Fulham’s Josh King and Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha at the senior squad’s preparation camp in Miami for the FIFA 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

It remains to be seen whether the 19-year-old has a future at Arsenal after only making six league appearances in the first-half of the season.

Nwaneri’s commitment was questioned by Marseille manager Habib Beye last month but it has not stopped him from getting a role with the Three Lions ahead of next month’s World Cup.

The youngster and the other invited trio will be temporarily filling in for the Arsenal players – Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke.

The Gunners quartet are not joining the camp until around the time of England’s first warm-up friendly, against Costa Rica on June 6 due to their Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30.
