Making the breakthrough as an academy player is a very difficult task in any case, but injuries can make the situation even more difficult.
That is the predicament that Josh Tahou has faced this season, with the left-back having been restricted to eight appearances in the league for Arsenal U18s.
A hard-working defender who is small in stature but is very determined and skilful, Tahou made his debut at U18 level against Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup last season.
When he has featured the prospect has often given a good account of himself, while he has also been named on the bench in the UEFA Youth League and the FA Youth Cup.
Tahou hasn’t played since February because of injury but he will be hoping to be fully fit for pre-season ahead of what will be a crucial campaign in his development.
The youngster will go into next season knowing that he needs to impress in order to secure his first professional contract at the club.
He will also face competition for a starting berth from two younger players, with Elyon Mbala and Hakeem Abubakar having both featured for the U18s this campaign.
Tahou, 17, will have belief that he can earn an extended stay with the club and will be aware of the importance of getting off to a good start next campaign.
