Liam Delap has been told he would become a 20-goal-a-season striker in the Premier League if he joined Everton this summer. David Moyes was keen on bringing Delap to Hill Dickinson Stadium last summer and held talks with the forward and his representatives.
The England U21 international had a £30million release clause in his Ipswich Town contract following the club’s Premier League relegation. However, he opted to join Chelsea, but his move to Stamford Bridge has not worked out as planned.
Delap has only scored twice in all competitions so far this season, and his future at the club now appears uncertain following the arrival of Xabi Alonso.
Everton will enter the summer transfer window open to exploring the striker market despite the improving tallies of Beto and Thierno Barry.
And former Blues forward Louis Saha has told Delap that his old club is the perfect place for him to fulfil his potential.
“Chelsea’s strategy is a bit messy," he said via Compare.Bet. "They've mixed a lot of profiles without really thinking it through, hoping something special would come out of it. But that's not how football works.
“This sometimes leads to bad consequences and can destroy the confidence of many players, and Liam Delap has been one of them.
“I do think that Everton will bring him back to his high standard and can help him fulfil his potential. He'd definitely bring something different than Beto and Barry.
“I think there are good things that will come out of this move if it materialises. I genuinely believe that Liam can be the type of striker who scores 20 goals if he's given the right chance.”
Speaking ahead of tomorrow's final game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur, Blues boss Moyes admitted his club needs 'a big summer' to bridge the European gap.
He said: “We need a big summer again as a football club. We need to have a big summer where we can build on it. We’re showing it doesn’t take much.
“It just needs a couple of your better players to lose a little bit of form, and it can quickly change your results and how you do.”
