Reece James believes Chelsea have a‘once in a generation’talent in their squad

It is well known that the underperforming Chelsea squad has plenty of talent waiting to be unleashed, although Reece James believes there are few as promising in world football as Estevao Willian.

Chelsea have missed out on Champions League football despite their talented squad, and will need a result on the final day of the season to secure a place in either the Europa or Conference League.

The Blues have been hit with injury woes again this season. Levi Colwill has only just made his first start following a serious knee injury.

Reece James thinks the sky is the limit for Estevao Willian

At the back end of the season, Chelsea have been without Estevao after he suffered a hamstring problem that has now ruled him out of the World Cup.

The Blues have been desperately missing the Brazilian’s creativity out wide, and didn’t even have a fit winger when they drew with Liverpool in the league.

When he does return though, James believes the sky is the limit for Estevao, telling Sky Sports that the youngster is more advanced than his age suggests he should be.

He said: “There’s very few that come through and you think he’s once in a generation, but when you see one, you know one, and I believe he’s one. I think for his age, he’s so much more advanced than he should be on the field. The way he thinks, the decisions he makes is high level.”

Estevao’s absence will put the pressure on Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho to deliver against Sunderland despite their poor form in 2026.

Positive Estevao fitness update

After fears the winger would miss the start of the new season due to his hamstring injury, there has now been a positive update regarding his fitness.

Estevao should be fit to join up with Xabi Alonso’s pre-season camp, which could be highly beneficial for Chelsea when taking into account this summer’s World Cup.

Joao Pedro, Andrey Santos, Cole Palmer and Colwill are amongst the big names who will not be representing their countries, and will instead join back up with the Blues early.

This could be a massive boost for the first few weeks of the season, allowing some of the key players to have had plenty of time to adjust to the new manager’s style of play.
