Barcelona 4-0 OL Lyonnes: Pajor and Paralluelo power Barca to fourth Champions League title

Barcelona are champions of Europe once again after beating Lyon 4-0 in a stunning second half display in the Champions League final.

Les Fenottes were the first to have the ball in the net, when the departing Lindsey Heaps had a rebounded effort ruled out for offside.

Largely suppressed by the French side in the first period, a pair of doubles from forwards Ewa Pajor and Salma Paralluelo saw them blister into an uncatchable lead.

Pere Romeu claims his first Champions League medal as head coach, though this is the clubs fourth title overall, having appeared in six consecutive finals since 2020.

Story of the Match

Both sides came into the game having lost their most recent European finals, with Lyon losing to Barca in 2024 and the Catalans falling to Arsenal last year.

Ballon D'Or winner Aitana Bonmati started on the bench after returning from injury, allowing 18-year-old Clara Serrajordi to start her first showpiece. At the other end of the experience ladder, centre-back Wendie Renard was making her twelfth final appearance.

It was an even, choppy beginning. Last year, Arsenal largely found success by withstanding Barca's pressure and hitting on the break. Lyon, however, with head coach Jonatan Giraldez coming from the school of La Masia himself, were aggressive and happy to go toe-to-toe.

The game's first notable opening came through Oslo's own Caroline Graham Hansen. The winger wrestled the ball back from Selma Bacha and navigated a low ball into the box where Alexia Putellas was waiting but dragged it wide.

Soon, the French giants made their own way into the final third and even into the back of the net.

Bacha glided in a splendid free-kick onto the head of Renard. Cata Coll kept her attempt out with a strong punch. Waiting to gather the rebound was Lindsey Heaps for a fairytale goal on her final match for the French side.

However, before the restart, referee Tess Olofsson paused proceedings as VAR eventually ruled it out, with Heaps in an offside position after Renard's header.

Barcelona were struggling to knit together any kind of possession-based rhythm. They went close twice, though via more direct means.

First, some lapse communication at the back from Lyon saw Christiane Endler rush out to meet a ball over the top from Putellas, only to be beaten to it by Ewa Pajor. The Pole had her head in her hands after her first-time chip as it landed in the side-netting.

Then, Barca nicked it back in the middle and had space to exploit with Putellas on the ball. The Spaniard - who may be playing her last game for the club - offloaded it to Pajor, whose finish again went wayward.

Indicative of the tit-for-tat way of things, there was Lyon chance sandwiched in between Barca's opportunities. A neat, intricate move from Melchie Dumornay and Jule Brand enabled the German came close to scoring ambitious finish from a tight angle.

Free-kicks once again proved effective from the left foot of Bacha. Her attempt from just outside the area had to be pawed aside by Coll.

It was far from a smooth first forty-five that suited Lyon more. But despite being unsettled for large portions, Barcelona still had threat.

After the break, La Blaugrana played with a renewed vitality. Lyon's high press was still forcing them to opt for fast breaks. 55 minutes in, the French champions were caught just short, allowing too much space for Patri Guijarro to run into.

The midfielder laid it into the path of Pajor. With over 200 club career goals to her name, it was unlikely the 29-year-old would her previous spurned chances bother her. A perfect touch and arrowed finish into the bottom corner later, she finally had that goal to her name.

Lyon rallied again soon afterwards. A clever backheel from Lily Yohannes - another 18-year-old making her final debut - set up Vicki Becho for a shot that Coll was a match too.

Barca head coach Pere Romeu, who was Giraldez's assistant before being given the job himself, must have given quite the team talk. Barcelona were now much more confident in the final third, carrying it for longer and making incisive passes.

With 20 minutes to go, they doubled their lead by making Lyon's sound backline look as though they were chasing shadows.

Substitute Claudia Pina drifted into the box with Esmee Brugts on hand for a strange one-two, as the Spaniard deflected it wide. Still with ample space in the six-yard area, Salma Paralluelo was able to play it back across to Pajor, who snapped up her second with ease.

This was now Barca's game. Pina and Bonmati's introduction gave them a boldness and ability to keep the ball higher.

They were still vulnerable at the back, however. Temwa Chawinga made a hash of her one-on-one attempt with Coll, who continued standing strong to keep a clean sheet.

Lyon continued to try and muster counters of their own, but there was little use. A minute from time and it was sealed. Paralluelo controlled the ball after a turnover and turned quickly to thump a third past Endler.

Into stoppage time, it was compounded even further. Ironically with the kind of counter attack that they struggled to make work in the first half.

As Lyon pushed up for some flickers of hope, Barcelona snatched it back. Pajor squared it to Paralluelo, who joined the Pole with a late brace with a sublime rolling finish.

Player of the Match - Ewa Pajor

A five-time runner-up of the UEFA Champions League, Pajor determination to finally get her hands on a winners medal was evident from the offset.

Though her finishing was loose early on, her efforts in the second half helped kill the game in favour of Barca, with two goals and an unselfish assist at the very end.

Her performance was a true testament to the centre forward mentality of always making sure you are there to take the next opportunity.
