Barcelona great Andres Iniesta is ready for his next chapter. The 22-year Barca legend and four-time Champions League winner is now a manager after retiring from football two years ago.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Iniesta is set to take charge of Gulf United FC, a Dubai-based second division side founded in 2019.
It's a modest starting point for a man who could've walked into far more glamorous roles on the back of his playing reputation alone.
Iniesta announced his retirement from professional football on the 8th of October 2024, having spent his final playing days with Emirates Club in the UAE, where he currently resides.
Barcelona legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta
Xavi, another player who could've commanded attention at any club in the world upon retirement, chose to begin his coaching journey at Al Sadd in Qatar, winning six trophies before eventually taking charge of his beloved Barcelona.
Iniesta appears to be following a similar philosophy, starting from the ground up, earning his credentials, and letting the results do the talking.
Gulf United have had their fair share of former Permier League talent grace the club. Former Norwich, Swansea and QPR midelfer Leroy Fer is among their ranks, and they've been managed by both Steven Taylor and Neil Taylor in recent years. They're a club with ambitions of earning promotion to the UAE Pro League, the country's top division, and achieving that goal would represent a huge first step for Iniesta in his new career.
A Serious Approach To A New Career for Iniesta

This isn't a vanity project or a retirement hobby. Iniesta's academic qualifications, his coaching courses, and his deliberate choice to start at second division level all point to someone who intends to build a genuine managerial career from the ground up.
The Morocco national team job had been linked to him earlier this year, with reports suggesting he could replace Walid Regragui ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Negotiations ultimately fell through, with Mohamed Ouahbi eventually appointed to lead the Atlas Lions into the tournament.
In hindsight, beginning at Gulf United FC rather than parachuting into an international role may prove to be the wiser, long-term decision. Managing a second division club in Dubai, away from the spotlight and the pressure that comes with a high-profile appointment, gives Iniesta the space to learn his craft, make his mistakes, and develop his ideas without the weight of expectation that his name inevitably carries.
Xavi's journey showed that patience and process pay dividends. Iniesta, a player who spent his entire career making the right decision at the right moment, appears to understand that in exactly the same way. If everything goes to plan in Dubai and beyond, it isn't too difficult to imagine a future where Iniesta is in the Barcelona dugout as manager. The Camp Nou would hardly complain.
