Arsenal open talks to sign "one of the best midfielders in the world", he's Eze 2.0 - opinion

Arsenal are Premier League champions, but the party hasn't even started yet.

Before the end of the month, the Gunners have the chance to truly immortalise themselves in football folklore, beating the indomitable force that is Paris Saint-Germain to win the Champions League for the first time in their history, so completing the double.

Mikel Arteta really has reshaped this football club, restoring title-winning quality to one of the biggest clubs in the country.

On the pitch, Arsenal have poured blood and sweat and tears into reaching thr top, but it's been the incredible rise in transfer success that has been the backbone of this project, with Eberechi Eze the latest big-money signing to have actually hit the mark.

Now, Arsenal are looking to repeat that deal.

Arsenal looking to repeat Eze signing

Eze has thrived at Arsenal, proving as the campaign has progressed. He cost a pretty penny last summer, joining from Crystal Palace for £67m.

But he's proved his worth and then some, nailing down a starting berth over the latter stages of the term.

Now, Arsenal are looking to repeat their own trick, ready to return for a player who pushed for a move to the Emirates in January, only for it to come to nought.

As per Caught Offside, Arsenal are in contact with Sandro Tonali's representatives ahead of the summer transfer window, though they are rivalled by Manchester City in this budding race.

The 26-year-old was mooted for a move to Arsenal in January, but Eddie Howe's resistance will wane this summer, given that he cannot offer the Italy international European football.

Valued at north of £70m, this would form a central part of Arsenal's summer strategy, but it would be well worth the endeavour.

Why Tonali could be Arsenal's next version of Eze

Hailed as "one of the best midfielders in the world" by his agent, Tonali has been crucial for Howe's Newcastle project over the past several years, winning the Carabao Cup in 2025 after beating Liverpool in the final. His elegance in midfield also proved instrumental in recording a top-four finish last year.

Newcastle knew they had a superstar on their hands when they paid £55m to bring him over from AC Milan in 2023, and while there have been some considerable bumps in the road for the Italian maestro, he has overcome his obstacles and started to shine.

He might not be stylistically similar to Eze, but Tonali has proven Premier League experience and success in disrupting the hegemony and winning silverware with a 'lesser' top-flight outfit.

Moreover, his partnership with Declan Rice could be one for the ages, acting as a foil and facilitating the England international's all-action brilliance. In that, he could find that Rice is his new Bruno Guimaraes.

And this is without even acknowledging the potential he has with Eze, who would thrive if buttressed by a pass master whose physicality has become something of an underrated element to his game. Tonali has won 57% of his ground battles in the Premier League this season, and this across so many different areas.

The fact that Man City are also interested should set the alarm bells ringing in north London, but Arsenal are the talk of the town right now, without a shadow of a doubt the most desirable outfit in the division.

Whereas before, when Arsenal used to splurge record-breaking sums on players such as Nicolas Pepe, now there is calculation and reasoning behind their marquee deals.

Eze has paid off, and by reinforcing an already excellent midfield with Tonali's signature, Arteta will prove to the world that this year's silver-laden success is anything other than a flash in the pan.
