Chelsea have a lot of work to do in this summer transfer window. Appointing Xabi Alonso was an excellent decision. But if BlueCo want the Spaniard to be a success, they need to back him in the upcoming summer transfer window.
This squad is nowhere near good enough to be competing with the best teams in England or in Europe. Hopefully, there is a recognition of that fact amongst the decision-makers at Stamford Bridge already.
But while the talks should be about improving the squad, the Blues have somehow found themselves in a situation where their best players are being linked with moves away. The one who looks closest to the exit door at the moment is Enzo Fernandez. Enzo Maresca’s impending arrival at Man City to replace Pep Guardiola appears to have made the Argentine a transfer target for them.
Fabrizio Romano is one of the most reliable journalists in football. And he has given a more detailed update on the situation involving Manchester City and Fernandez. And from his comments, it does not exactly sound like the Citizens view the Chelsea midfielder as their top priority going into the summer, despite some outlets suggesting so.
What Fabrizio Romano has said about transfer rumours involving Man City and Enzo Fernandez
According to comments made by Romano on his YouTube channel:
“Interest from Man City in Elliot Anderson has not changed with Pep Guardiola leaving is not going to change anything. Man City and Enzo Maresca already agreed on considering Elliot Anderson as a top target. Then they have some other names in the list in case this deal doesn’t happen, let’s see what happens with Rodri as well, some players like Enzo Fernandez and more have been mentioned internally at Man City, also Sandro Tonali. So, they have some names internally under consideration.”
Reading between the lines, it feels like Manchester City might be viewing Fernandez as more of an option than someone they want to sign at all costs. Now, it remains to be seen if they make their move or not.
Fernandez is arguably Chelsea’s best player at the moment. That being said, the club do need to raise funds ahead of an important summer transfer window. And the Argentine is one of the few players who can bring in a big transfer fee.
Will Xabi Alonso get a say on Enzo Fernandez’s potential Chelsea exit?
One would hope that Alonso ends up having a big say, no matter what happens with Fernandez. If the Argentine does end up leaving, replacing him will not be an easy task, that is for sure.
Fernandez has produced 22 goal contributions from midfield so far this season. 15 goals and 7 assists. You simply cannot go out and sign someone who will guarantee that kind of output. So, the best-case scenario would be him staying.
Then again, there are many who feel that Chelsea might have more balance without Fernandez. There are those who think Palmer and the Argentine cannot work in the same team. Ultimately, those decisions should be made by Alonso and nobody else.
