It will be very interesting to see who Chelsea end up signing this summer. There are a lot of players who are expected to head for the exit door and will need replacing. At the same time, one cannot overlook the fact that the expectation is for the squad to be improved over the next transfer window. With Xabi Alonso coming in, the fans are finally excited again. But it won’t take long for that to dim, if they don’t see genuine ambition when it comes to signing quality talent.
One position where Chelsea need to strengthen this summer is on the left flank. Chelsea signed Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens last summer for around a combined €100 million last summer. Neither has looked like a capable starter.
Suggestions are that Chelsea could be looking for someone capable of playing a combination role, both on that wing and as a number 10. And one name stands out above the rest.
Morgan Rogers is someone who Chelsea are believed to have had on their radar for years now. And according to a report from Max Fretwell on Striver Football, he is someone who has fans internally and was ready to join in January, but Aston Villa refused to part ways.
Morgan Rogers looks set to leave Aston Villa this summer
It is believed that Aston Villa would not stand in Rogers’ way this summer. He played a key part in their recent Europa League triumph and looks ready for the next step.
Of course, he has that City Academy history. Chelsea have signed a lot of players coming from that environment. The results have been mixed. It remains to be seen if they are able to get this deal over the line or not.
Manchester United are also another club believed to be interested in Rogers. So, let’s see which club comes out on top in this transfer race.
Would Morgan Rogers be a good signing for Chelsea?
The speculation around Rogers has divided the Chelsea fanbase. There are many who view him as one of the best in the Premier League and someone bound to go to the next level. On the other hand, there are also those who view him as someone who is a bit overrated and would not raise the bar exponentially if he joined Chelsea this summer.
Of course, we will only find out which one if we see him in a Chelsea jersey someday. The expectation is that it would take a fee at least around £80 million to convince Aston Villa.
If Chelsea are to shell out that sort of money on a player, they need him to be a guaranteed success. Does Rogers fit that? Or would he represent another risk?
