Over the last few days, all the talk has been about Manchester City potentially bringing in Enzo Maresca as the replacement for Pep Guardiola and the players that the Italian could try to sign from his former club, Chelsea. One name that has been doing the rounds constantly is that of Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez enjoyed a brilliant time under Maresca. It was the Italian manager who turned him into a box-crashing midfielder with an immense output. Before that, the Argentine had actually struggled to find a genuine role at Chelsea.
So, it is not hard to understand why Maresca might be keen on a reunion and Fernandez might be open to the idea. And amid all this, Chelsea are now being linked with one of Manchester City’s midfielders as well.
Nico Gonzalez’s name is now being linked with Chelsea as a potential option for this summer. But would be a good signing for the club?
Is Nico Gonzalez a good signing for Chelsea right now?
Gonzalez has not exactly been a mainstay in Manchester City’s team. He had looked like a starter in the first half of the season but has lost his place in the team, and mostly been on the bench lately.
As a result, it has been suggested that he could leave. And if he does, Chelsea could be one of the teams looking to sign him.
There is an idea that Chelsea could look to switch up their midfield dynamic this summer. That might mean bringing in a physical defensive midfielder to place beside Moises Caicedo, and perhaps giving the Ecuadorian a bit more freedom to roam around.
If Fernandez does head to Manchester City, perhaps he could be included as part of the deal. Let’s see how this all plays out this summer.
Gonzalez signing would divide the fanbase
One would imagine that signing Gonzalez would divide the fanbase. The optics certainly do not look great at first glance.
Chelsea might be losing one of their best players to Man City, if not the very best. And in return, they would be bringing in someone who can’t even get into their team at the moment. That simply is not how a top team operates.
But then again, Cole Palmer was not playing for Manchester City much either and look what he has become at Chelsea. It is all about finding the right players for Xabi Alonso’s system. And if the Spaniard thinks he is the right fit, a move should be made.
