Luke O'Nien replaces Omar Alderete in the Sunderland defence, but the Paraguayan is at least fit enough for a place on the bench. Alderete suffered an injury in training in the week before the Everton game and was forced off early on at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Alderete joined on the bench by Bertrand Traore, who is back in the squad for the first time since suffering a recurrence of his knee injury in the win at Leeds in March.
Robin Roefs starts in goal with Lutsharel Geertruida, O'Nien, Nordi Mukiele and Reinildo in defence.
Granit Xhaka is again joined by Noah Sadiki and Enzo Le Fee in midfield, with Trai Hume and Nilson Angulo out wide and Brian Brobbey up front.
