Sunderland beat ten-man Chelsea 2-1 on the final day of the Premier League season to pip the Blues to a place in the Europa League.
Chelsea led their hosts in the table as they headed up to Wearside and knew a win would have been enough to qualify them for either the Europa or Conference League.
Trai Hume’s volley and Malo Gusto’s own-goal ensured their defeat, in spite of Cole Palmer’s consolation strike, and Brighton’s loss to Manchester United ensured the Black Cats would finish seventh and qualify for the Europa League.
Wesley Fofana’s sending off as Chelsea chased the game did little to help, and the Blues will now play no European football as Xabi Alonso takes over the team next season.
