Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed talks have been held about signing Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Speaking about the prospect of the England international making the switch to the Allianz Arena this summer, Eberl said:

“We had a very good conversation and hope we can make progress.”

While it is believed that Gordon’s agent has had productive meetings with Bayern, discussions with Newcastle about the transfer fee have yet to take place.

There is a sizeable gap between the 2 clubs’ valuations of Gordon

It is believed that Newcastle are holding out for a fee in the region of £75m for the 25-year-old, while Bayern were hoping to do a deal closer to €60m (£52m).

That means the two sides have a £20m+ gap to bridge in face-to-face talks. Some of that could be covered by performance-related add-ons, but you do feel there is still some way to go before an agreement is reached.

Newcastle may prefer to sell Gordon abroad

Gordon does have suitors in the Premier League. Liverpool are said to have cooled their interest, having originally made a move for the player in the summer of 2024. However, Arsenal and Chelsea are both believed to be keeping close tabs on the winger’s situation.

While English teams would be more likely to match the Magpies’ asking price, you would think that a sale to a foreign club would be the preferred option.

Gordon is reportedly keen on a switch to Germany, too, so you do feel a compromise with Bayern will be found. Eberl certainly sounds confident that an agreement is on the cards.
