‘A bid from Real Madrid’ – Chelsea player’s stance confirmed

This is going to be the most important summer transfer window for Chelsea since the BlueCo takeover. BlueCo have made numerous mistakes and might finally be starting to recognise them. The decision to appoint Xabi Alonso points in that direction. In the past, they would have probably steered away from it and brought in someone more willing to work within their model.

But that model has not produced any results. It is time to restart. And that might mean parting ways with some players who have been integral to this team over the last four seasons.

One name that falls under that category is Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine’s future is in serious doubt going into the summer transfer window. Manchester City have been suggested as a potential destination with Enzo Maresca coming in as the replacement for Pep Guardiola. But let’s not forget, the one club the midfielder has always been linked with is Real Madrid.

Any move might come down to the financials of the matter. According to Ben Jacobs, Fernandez would welcome a bid from Real Madrid, while some informal and formative talks have already taken place with Manchester City. He wants to play the Champions League, with the Blues’ poor season leaving them in a weaker position to persuade the Argentine midfielder to sign a new deal. However, the club won’t consider a departure this summer for a book loss.

Will Chelsea receive a satisfactory transfer offer for Enzo Fernandez this summer?

It is believed that a transfer fee in the region of £70-80 million would be enough for Chelsea to avoid making a ‘book loss’. Fernandez was signed from Benfica in early 2023 for a then-record £106 million deal.

It remains to be seen if any club is willing to make an offer in the region for Fernandez. But, depending on the modern-day transfer market, it should not be that big of an issue if the likes of Real Madrid or Man City are absolutely convinced that he is the right player for them.

As for Chelsea, they would then need to find a replacement for Fernandez. They have agreed a deal for fellow Argentine international, Valentin Barco already, after an immense season at Strasbourg. There have also been suggestions that the club could be looking to bring in a different profile altogether. A physical presence to team up with Moises Caicedo in the middle of the park. Let’s see what route the club take.

What message does this send to Xabi Alonso?

Alonso will be arriving as the new manager of Chelsea this summer. And key players like Fernandez leaving won’t help him, that is for sure.

Fernandez has 22 goal contributions to his name this season. He has arguably been the club’s player of the season. He most certainly has been more consistent than Joao Pedro.

Also, when the appointment of Alonso was announced, it was suggested by some outlets that he wanted to keep Fernandez and even viewed him as a member of his leadership group. So, in many ways, if Chelsea sanctioned the departure of Fernandez, it would come as a blow to the Spaniard. Then again, if it helps him build the squad in his own vision, perhaps it will be a positive in the long run.
