Sunderland fans packed out the Stadium of Light for one of the most historic days in the club’s modern history as the Black Cats secured European qualification for the first time in 53 years.
A remarkable 2-1 win over Chelsea sealed Sunderland’s place in the Europa League, with Régis Le Bris’ side finishing seventh in the Premier League just one year after winning promotion through the Championship play-offs. It completed a stunning rise for a club that was still in League One only four years ago.
The day had already felt special long before kick-off, with the home support creating a superb atmosphere as Sunderland chased a result that would keep their European dream alive. Trai Hume set the tone with a brilliant first-time volley, before Malo Gusto’s own goal doubled the lead after the break. Cole Palmer pulled one back for Chelsea, but Sunderland held firm after Wesley Fofana’s red card to spark unforgettable scenes at full-time.
