Chelsea‘likely’to make move for Xabi Alonso’s former player at Real Madrid

Chelsea could turn to Real Madrid in a bid to improve their struggling defence this summer.

It is an area of the pitch that Xabi Alonso will be keen to strengthen once he gets down to work at Cobham.

Defensively, Chelsea were poor once again against Sunderland on Sunday, and it looks like at least one new centre-back will be arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea ‘likely’ to make move for Dean Huijsen

Chelsea have shown interest in Dean Huijsen in the past, and it appears that he is still a defender they appreciate.

The Telegraph’s Matt Law thinks Huijsen joining Chelsea is unlikely, but another journalist expects the Blues to at least make a move for him.

Simon Phillips has reported on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that Chelsea are “likely” to make another attempt to sign Huijsen this summer.

He is someone Alonso knows well after working with the 21-year-old at Real Madrid, while Chelsea are also familiar with him after his time in the Premier League with Bournemouth.

In total, Huijsen made 23 appearances under Alonso this season before the new Chelsea manager was sacked by Real Madrid in January.

Chelsea would be better off signing Antonio Rudiger instead

If Chelsea are going to sign a defender from Real Madrid this summer, it should be their former centre-half Antonio Rudiger, not Huijsen.

Rudiger has way more experience than Huijsen, which is what Chelsea need right now, and is probably a more aggressive and dominant defender than the Spain international.

Chelsea’s current crop of centre-backs have been bullied too easily this season. Rudiger never allowed himself to get shoved around like that during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea do plan to sign a new centre-half, which fans will view as good news, especially after watching Wesley Fofana at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. But it cannot be more of the same, and Huijsen could prove to be just that.
