Awkward moment broadcaster cuts Spurs star's interview short to show Arsenal trophy lift

Antonin Kinsky saw his post-match interview brutally cut short, as broadcaster NBC chose to show rivals Arsenal lifting the Premier League trophy.

The Tottenham goalkeeper could finally breathe a sigh of relief on Sunday, as his team secured their top-flight safety with a 1-0 victory at home to Everton on the final day.

Joao Palhinha scored the all-important goal to ensure Spurs finished two points above West Ham, who were relegated.

Having looked on course for an unprecedented relegation during much of the second half of the season, the result came as a huge relief for the north Londoners.

There were huge celebrations at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and in the talkSPORT studios, with Jamie O'Hara crashing the Goals Show stream to share his delight.

For Kinsky, Sunday marked a positive end to a tough first season at Tottenham, whose Spurs career looked all but over two months ago.

After joining the club last summer, he started out as second-choice goalkeeper to Guglielmo Vicario, before getting his chance in the Champions League round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid.

But disaster struck as the Czech twice lost his footing to gift early goals, and washauled off after just 17 minutes with Spurs 3-0 down.

Quick turnaround

Having come back into the side for the season's run-in, Kinsky reflected on a rollercoaster debut year as he joined NBC Sports on the pitch after the Everton win.

However, just as ex-Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was about to ask him a question, the interview was cut short in awkward fashion.

Presenter Rebecca Lowe abruptly intervened to announce that the coverage would be switching to Selhurst Park, where Spurs' bitter rivals Arsenal were preparing to lift the Premier League trophy.

Lowe cut in: "I'm so sorry, I can't even allow Tim to ask the question, because Arsenal are about to lift the Premier League trophy.

"Maybe he can, offline, give a word of wisdom or two to a fellow goalkeeper."

Turning to Kinsky, Lowe then asked for his microphone to be handed over, as she informed viewers of the swift transition.

The presenter told the Czech: "Thank you so much, congratulations again. Thank you so much for joining us, I so appreciate it.

"We do have to rush to Selhurst Park, though, because the big moment is about to come."

The broadcast then immediately switched to coverage of Arsenal, where Mikel Arteta could be seen collecting his winners' medal with the Premier League trophy on full display.

This would no doubt have left a bitter taste in Spurs' fans' mouths, as their rivals enjoyed huge celebrations by being crowned champions for the first time in 22 years.

'Didn't go well'

Before his interview was brought to an abrupt end, Kinsky spoke candidly about his challenging first year in England.

Despite his Spurs career looking over following his Atletico Madrid nightmare, the stopper has since produced a remarkable comeback to play a key role in the club’s Premier League survival.

He was reinstalled as Tottenham's starting goalkeeper after Vicario underwent hernia surgery, and has come up with a number of crucial saves which have seen him hold onto the shirt even after the No.1's return.

He told NBC: “I have to say, the season didn't go well for me.

“I came here with different expectations, you know, to be able to fight for the spot and throughout the whole year, I wasn't even close, you know, to get there. So this was, for me, the most difficult time.

“And then I got on the pitch against Atletico. Of course, it went even worse than most of the season.

“But still at least, you know, I was like, "Okay, so let's do what I do because I believe in myself. I believe that I do the right stuff and as soon as the next opportunity comes, I will be ready'."

Discussing his comeback, Kinsky went on: “This is what I did throughout the year. So it's not a reaction to Atletico or something like this.

“It's the reaction since day one of the season. I don't know who we started against here, but I was just pushing every day, doing my maximum and believing that it [a chance] was going to come.

“It came at the end of the year, which I'm happy that it did, but I'm grateful. At the same time, it was deserved.”
