Chelsea will need to change their transfer policy. If that is not clear to BlueCo by now, it will never be. They have spent two billion pounds building a squad that cannot even qualify for Europe. Let that sink in. In fact, it is remarkable that more pressure is not on the decision-makers. Whenever there is a change, it seems to be limited to the head coach.
Well, they have brought in a manager now. And the aim is for Xabi Alonso to have a bigger say on football matters. Hopefully, that will help things improve.
Alonso did an immense job at Bayer Leverkusen with limited resources. He was not as successful at Real Madrid, but considering how things have turned out at the Bernabeu since his exit, perhaps there is a need to reframe his stint there.
Now, a lot will be on the shoulders of Alonso, when it comes to rebuilding this squad. At least that is what the fans are hoping. And it looks like there are five things that the club will be looking for when it comes to recruiting talent. According to Chelsea.news, Simon Phillips wrote:
“[Sources tell me] Chelsea want to bring in proven players, some more experience, more physicality, height, with a focus on mentality monsters – the term we keep hearing about.”
Mentality monsters wanted at Stamford Bridge
So, it looks like there are a lot of traits that Chelsea will be looking at, when it comes to making signings this summer. ‘Mentality monster’ seems to be the buzz phrase going into this summer window.
Now, to be fair, this team’s mentality has been brought into question time and again. Under Enzo Maresca, they often dropped points from winning positions. With Liam Rosenior as manager, they went on a losing streak without scoring a solitary goal.
Those are signs that this team is not mentally strong enough and can’t seem to drag themselves out of tough situations. So, they could certainly do with characters who will add that to the roster.
Chelsea need proven proven quality this summer
At the end of the day, there is no replacement for quality. And that has to be the first thing that Chelsea look for this summer.
Right now, they have far too many players who are mediocre at best. They simply are not good enough to be starting games for Chelsea.
That is because the club relied heavily on potential. But it is often never met by youngsters, especially when you hand them seven or eight-year-long contracts so early in their careers. BlueCo have had to learn that the hard way.
