Man City have had initial “talks” with the representatives of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Posting on his X account, the talkSPORT reporter said that the Argentinian international “wants to play” in the Champions League, with City and Real Madrid seen as viable destinations:

“Enzo Fernandez made a gesture to Chelsea fans at full-time following the defeat to Sunderland that could be interpreted as a goodbye.”

“Fernandez would welcome a bid from Real Madrid, while some informal and formative talks have taken place with Manchester City.”

“He wants to play UCL, with Chelsea’s poor season leaving them in a weaker position to persuade Fernandez to sign a new deal. However, Chelsea won’t consider a sale this summer for a book loss.”

Fernandez and Maresca could link up for a second time

It is believed that the Blues vice-captain was particularly unhappy about the departure of Enzo Maresca when he left Stamford Bridge at the start of this year.

With Maresca expected to succeed Pep Guardiola in the City dugout, there is a chance that the Italian could link up with his former player once again.

Man City are also pursuing another midfielder

Fernandez is by no means the only option under consideration as Director of Football Hugo Viana looks to strengthen the club’s numbers in the middle of the park.

It is believed that City are the favourites to sign Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, ahead of rivals Manchester United.

Both Anderson and Fernandez are targets that have been approved by Maresca. Fabrizio Romano says the pair are on the club’s radar, along with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali.

A lot may also hinge on the future of Rodri. The 29-year-old has just a year left on his contract at the Etihad, and if he chooses to leave, it would raise the chances of formal bids being lodged for the likes of Fernandez.
