Jamie Carragher’s PL top six predictions have aged terribly – he had Man Utd finishing 9th

The 2025/26 Premier League season has come to an end, with Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side crowned champions for the first time in 22 years, finishing ahead of Pep Guardiola's Man City side by seven points.

The Gunners had earned a reputation in recent years of being the bridesmaid rather than the bride, having finished as runners-up in each of the previous three campaigns, behind City and then Liverpool last season. But they have finally overcome that with a fine campaign, and silenced the doubters in the process.

One of those doubters was Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, who was asked to give his predictions for the top six prior to the campaign by Sky Bet - but that wasn't the worst of his picks by any stretch of the imagination.

Carragher Predictions Haven't Aged Well

Jamie Carragher

Speaking before the season started, Carragher was asked while on set for The Overlap to provide his predictions for who would finish in the top six this season, and his answers have now come back to bite him.

"My top six this season will be Liverpool top of the league. I'll go Arsenal second, I'll go [Manchester] City third, I'll go Chelsea fourth, I will go Tottenham fifth, and Newcastle sixth," he said.

When asked where Manchester United will finish, Carragher was brutal with his prediction.

"I think they'll finish ninth."

United went on to finish third in the Premier League after appointing Michael Carrick as their interim manager in January, replacing Ruben Amorim, while Aston Villa finished fourth after an excellent end to their campaign. Man City finished as runners-up, behind champions Arsenal, while Carragher's beloved Liverpool could only manage to finish fifth.

Chelsea, who Carragher predicted would finish fourth, came 10th, while Newcastle finished 12th, after two miserable seasons.

Man Utd Silence Their Doubters

Michael Carrick

A poor start to the season for Man Utd saw manager Ruben Amorim sacked in January, just when it looked like Carragher's prediction for them may be coming true.

But Carrick's arrival, married with 12 wins in 17 games, saw them climb up the table and claim third place in the table, just seven points behind second place Man City, and earn a spot in the Champions League for the first time since the 2023/24 season, where they were eliminated at the group stage.

They'll now be looking to build on that, and Carragher's prediction for the next season will be something that everyone is paying close attention to after how badly it went this time around.
