It looks like quite a few Chelsea players could be heading for the exit door over the summer. The Blues finished 10th, failing to qualify for any European competition as a result. And that might have been the final straw for a lot of the club’s established players, who have seen this project head nowhere over the past four seasons under BlueCo.
Obviously, there has been a lot of talk about Enzo Fernandez in recent months. But he is not the only Chelsea player expected to leave in the summer transfer window.
Some have even come out and criticised things openly. Most fans would have agreed with Marc Cucurella’s sentiments about the transfer policy. But when an active player is so honest in the media, it often points towards an impending exit. Barcelona had looked like his next destination for quite some time. But now, it looks like he could be headed somewhere also, although Spain remains the landing spot.
According to comments by Gerard Romero on Jijantes (via ChelsTransfer), it looks like Cucurella is now expected to join Atletico Madrid and not Barcelona. He said:
“Honestly, I see it now as pretty cold. At Barcelona, the feeling is that Cucurella is going to Atletico.”
Chelsea player looks set to join Atletico Madrid this summer
Cucurella did not look like the best signing in his first 18 months at the club. Early on, there was even talk of a loan move to Manchester United. Thankfully, that did not happen.
Cucurella has grown into one of Chelsea’s nailed-on starters over time though. He has been one of the club’s most steady performers and someone who is world-class on his day.
That being said, his performance levels have shaky in recent times. And one has to wonder if his heart was not in for the past few months.
Could Man City enter the race to sign Cucurella?
Cucurella is one of the players who has publicly spoken about the club’s transfer policy and not agreeing with it. He also did not seem pleased with the departure of Enzo Maresca.
It would not exactly be a good look for BlueCo if they let him leave in the very next summer transfer window. But if the player wants it, they might be willing to sanction it.
Atletico Madrid seem like Cucurella’s most likely destination now. But do not overlook Man City either, where Maresca is set to be the next manager.
