Arsenal have reignited their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to reports in the Italian media.

Tuttomercatoweb (TMW) claim that after making their initial move for the 26-year-old in January, the Gunners have returned to the negotiating table.
While the chances of a deal being agreed between the London club and Newcastle midway through the season were deemed impossible, the situation is very different now.
TMW report that the “clubs are in contact to understand margins and figures” ahead of a potential transfer.
Arsenal will have to pay a sizeable fee
While the Magpies are said to be willing to offload the likes of Anthony Gordon and (potentially) Tino Livramento, they would prefer to keep hold of Tonali.
There have been reports suggesting that there is a gentleman’s agreement between the player and Newcastle in which he would be allowed to leave if they failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Even if that is true, though, the fee required to secure Tonali’s signature will still be pretty high. They paid €70m for his services in the summer of 2023, making him the most expensive Italian of all time. It may take an offer in the region of £100m now.

Tonali does have other suitors
Other reports have mentioned Manchester United as another contender in the race to snap up the Italian international.
Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that manager Michael Carrick “specifically wants” to bring Tonali to Old Trafford this summer.
Interest from other teams would complicate matters for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side are also hoping to strengthen the attack over the coming months, and there is unlikely to be room in the budget for Tonali and a £100m+ forward like Julian Alvarez. A difficult choice may have to be made.
