Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid Plot Move for Enzo Fernandez: Reports

Real Madrid are trying to convince Chelsea to let go of their prized midfielder this summer. That pursuit has zeroed in on Enzo Fernandez, the 25-year-old Argentina international, whose representatives have supposedly made known to the Stamford Bridge hierarchy his desire to leave. The Argentinian has also walked away from talks over an extension, despite earlier hopes of tying him down to fresh long-term terms.

Florentino Perez has personally earmarked the midfielder to be the centrepiece of his forthcoming presidential election campaign and has ordered extensive groundwork on a potential deal. Los Blancos’ recruitment department now sees Fernandez as a better fit for the long-term, and they believe they know the financial structure that will tempt the Blues into talks.

The World Cup winner joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 in a then-British record £106.8m transfer, and he has a contract at the club until 2032.

Further reports suggest Fernandez would be delighted to join Real Madrid, and there have been some informal and formative talks with Manchester City. Notably, he made a gesture to Chelsea fans at full-time after the defeat to Sunderland that could be interpreted as a farewell.

The Blues’ 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light meant they finished the season in 10th place and will not play European football in 2026-27 – a fact that has weakened their hand in keeping hold of their best players. Crucially, Jose Mourinho, who recently agreed a two-year contract to return as Real Madrid manager after negotiations with Florentino Perez, is understood to be a huge admirer of Fernandez. The Portuguese legend would welcome building his new-look midfield around the Argentine.

Chelsea Eye Alex Scott as Potential Replacement Should Fernandez Depart

Chelsea are interested in Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and believe he could be the man to take Fernandez’s spot in Xabi Alonso’s side. The 22-year-old Englishman has been in impressive form for the Cherries this season, earning rave reviews across Europe for his resistance to pressing and progressive passing.

Incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has named Fernandez as one of his five leaders and is eager for the Argentine to stay at the club. However, the Spaniard might have to urgently alter his plans if his playmaker insists on his dream move to the Spanish capital.

Scott won’t be short of competition. Liverpool, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Arsenal are also said to have taken a shine to the 22-year-old. Chelsea will need to move fast in the summer window to get their man before any bidding war escalates even further.
