Tuttosport: Modric decides to leave Milan – the factors and why Real Madrid return is possible

After AC Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, Luka Modric’s future looks like it will be away from the club.

According to Tuttosport (via Calciomercato.com), Modric has already decided to leave Milan and to not accept a possible contract renewal offer. His current deal expires at the end of next month but there is a one-year option, though it has always been understand that the midfielder will have the final say.

His decision seems to be to leave, and this is without even waiting for the start of the new coaching project following the big shake-up by RedBird owner Gerry Cardinale. In one fell swoop he dismissed Massimiliano Allegri, Igli Tare, Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani.

Modric on the move

According to the Turin-based newspaper, the Croatian – who returned to the pitch in the second half of the decisive match against Cagliari – was reportedly deeply shaken by the end of the season and Milan’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Furthermore, given his deep respect for Allegri, the Rossoneri’s decision to part ways with the manager has played a role in Modric’s decision in these turbulent hours. Where could he now end up, though?

The doors to Real Madrid could sensationally reopen for the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, but this time not as a player. Tuttosport reveal that Modric is not attracted by the alternative options of returning to Dinamo Zagreb or moving to less competitive leagues like the Saudi Pro League or the MLS.

Hence, the possibility of returning to Madrid – where he played from 2012 to 2025 – with a new role is possible. It remains to be seen whether he would go back as a director or as a key figure in the coaching staff led by José Mourinho (should Florentino Perez win the presidential elections).

As well as Allegri, the former Spurs star was very close to former sporting director Igli Tare, who has also gone. Modric’s exit is not yet official, but will likely be announced after the conclusion of his World Cup experience with the Croatian national team.
