Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has left Barcelona upon the expiry of her contract, with Women's Super League side London City Lionesses reported to have held 'positive talks.'
The 32-year-old ends a successful 14-year spell at her childhood club, where she has won 38 trophies, including eight league titles and four Champions Leagues.
During her time with the Catalonians, she has won the World Cup with Spain while being part of the team that finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025.
Putellas, who has 146 caps for her country, captained Barcelona to their fourth Champions League title on Saturday.
The midfielder scored 232 goals in 507 appearances, the second-highest, only behind Melaine Sarrano on 516.
She leaves Barcelona as a legend and marks the conclusion of a significant era for Pere Romeu ’s side.
Putellas reflects on her Barcelona journey
"It has been a perfect story” - Putellas said on Instagram
“I always said I wanted my final moments to come while I was at my very best, giving everything and with 100 per cent energy.
“At six years old I only saw men playing in the stadium, and it would never have occurred to me that one day, in that very same place, more than 90,000 cules would be shouting my name.”
"We have taken the women's team further than we ever could have imagined”
London City Lionesses lead the race
London City Lionesses, who finished sixth in their debut season in the WSL, have been monitoring her situation over the last few months and have held positive talks.
Eder Mesastre's side have landed some impressive coups since promotion to the top flight, including French internationals Grace Greyro and Delphine Cascarino, and remain confident in striking a deal.
They are looking to build a squad capable of breaking into the WSL top three and have been working on several deals, including Papi Leon, who looks set to join the club this summer.
Despite interest from the NSWL, London City remain frontrunners for Putellas' signature in a move which would highlight the rapid growth of the WSL.
