A reunion with Light Blues manager Danny Rohl could be on the cards for the stopper
Rangers transfer target Pierce Charles is ‘set to leave’ Sheffield Wednesday - but now English giants Manchester City have entered the transfer race for the goalkeeper.
Charles, 20, spent his younger years in the academy ranks of the blue half of Manchester before making the switch to Hillsborough. He was handed his Owls debut in the first team under current Rangers boss Danny Rohl, who is now reportedly hoping for a reunion with the Northern Ireland international. Charles was relegated to EFL League One with Wednesday last season.
City are reportedly hoping to enlist Charles again as a replacement for current backup goalkeeper James Trafford. The 23-year old is heavily linked with a move away in the summer, with Newcastle United and Tottenham leading the chase. The cup double winners are now looking at Charles as an alternative. Celtic, Cardiff and QPR have all also expressed an interest.
Rangers transfer target ‘set to leave’ current club
According to TalkSPORT: “Manchester City are exploring re-signing Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pierce Charles. Charles is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday following their relegation to League One. TalkSPORT has previously reported Scottish giants Rangers are among the clubs vying for his signature.”
As legendary boss Pep Guardiola has left his position at the Etihad after a decade, there is now an air of uncertainty surrounding Man City as they find a replacement. Trafford was given a chance in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup this season and flourished, keeping a clean sheet in both finals. However, whether the new manager will put as much trust in the second stopper as Pep remains to be seen.
Where would Charles fit in at Rangers?
Current Rangers number one Jack Butland has now been at the club for three years. Despite being a loyal servant, his form towards the end of the last season dwindled, particularly in terms of distribution with the ball at his feet. A product of the City academy, Charles has been shaped into playing their style of play out from the back, as one of his main attributes is his kicking.
The Light Blues also have Scotland international Liam Kelly in their ranks, whose now been the backup keeper for two years. The 30-year old was set to leave the club in the summer upon the expiration of his contract, but has now entered advanced talks for a two-year deal.
