Premier League Clubs Identify Liverpool Man As Top Target

With the 2025/26 Premier League season now behind us, Liverpool are looking to pick up the pieces. It has been a desperately disappointing campaign for Arne Slot’s men – some big changes are likely to occur at the club as a result.

One player who is expected to leave is home-grown defender Joe Gomez. The 29-year-old has been at Liverpool since 2015, when he joined the club for a fee of £3.5 million from Charlton Athletic.

Sadly, injuries have blighted Gomez’s time in football – what could’ve been a promising Liverpool career swiftly became something lesser. Nevertheless, a talented player, he still has two Premier League title and a Champions League trophy under his belt.

Now, with one year left on his existing contract, potential suitors are beginning to circle. According to a report from the Daily Mail, Aston Villa, AC Milan and Besiktas are all looking to snap the Catford man up in the summer transfer window.

Previously, teams such as Burnley, Leeds United, Everton, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Everton were also interested in a move for the player [via Yorkshire Post]. It remains to be seen if any of these clubs will resume their efforts to bring him on board this summer.

A few weeks ago, following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, Gomez spoke on his future: “I think anything can happen. I don’t know is the honest answer.

“I’ve only got a year left on my contract, so I don’t know. Whatever’s meant to be will be, but I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I always will be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this. All I can do is be thankful and we’ll see.”

Despite his many injuries woes, Gomez has managed to secure a respectable amount of playing time this season. Much of this can be attributed to his adaptability – while he is a natural centre-back, he can also play as a full-back on either side of the backline.

Furthermore, with a heavy-set frame and standing at 6ft 2, he’s also very strong in the air. He used to be quick off the mark, too, but injuries have diminished his once-impressive pace.

Should Liverpool let Joe Gomez go?

Ultimately, with just one year left on his current deal, there is no better time for the Reds to let Gomez leave the club. He’s a great defender when fit, but his never-ending series of injuries often renders him a liability within the squad.

With Jeremy Jacquet due to join the Reds in the summer, with a deal having been completed several months ago, Gomez risks being left out in the cold if he stays at Anfield. Liverpool are not blessed with an abundance of centre-backs, but it’s safe to assume that Virgil van Dijk and Jacquet will be their starting pair at the dawn of the 2026/27 campaign.
