Emerging reports have revealed that Filip Jorgensen has officially requested to leave Chelsea following a meeting with club officials after growing frustrated with a clear lack of game time at Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old Denmark international has been an understudy to Robert Sanchez this season. Crucially, the Blues are now more open to letting him go, having previously rejected his January exit request.
Jorgensen arrived from Villarreal in the summer of 2024 for a fee of around £21m and put pen to paper on a long-term deal that keeps him in west London until 2031. But the switch has not brought the steady minutes he was hoping for, with the Dane making just a handful of appearances in all competitions this term.
His sole Premier League appearance was against Manchester United in September, after Sanchez was dismissed early on. He also endured costly errors in the 5-2 Champions League last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. That painful match at the Parc des Princes was a turning point for the goalkeeper, who subsequently had minor groin surgery and hasn’t featured since.
Jorgensen has been warned he has a genuine chance of becoming Brian Riemer’s number one in the United States, with Denmark forced into the World Cup play-offs and 39-year-old Kasper Schmeichel under heavy scrutiny.
Mike Penders’ Return Could Pave The Way For Jorgensen’s Chelsea Exit
A change of heart from Chelsea seems to be linked to the imminent return of Mike Penders, the 20-year-old Belgian who has been turning heads on loan at Strasbourg. The Ligue 1 stopper is seen as the long-term answer between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.
Jorgensen and Sanchez are both in real doubt over their futures this summer, with one of the pair likely to be shipped out to allow Penders to come in. Besiktas and West Ham United were strongly linked during the January window, with the Hammers exploring a move as they battled to avoid relegation. Chelsea rebuffed those approaches at the time, but it looks like the whole equation has shifted ahead of the summer window.
Given the regard in which Jorgensen is held within the building, the Blues are still expected to demand a fee at least matching what they received for Villarreal. The summer window is opening soon, and with the World Cup looming large, permanent suitors should emerge in the coming weeks.
