Man Utd are expected to make a formal bid for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, according to reports.

The I Paper claim that the Red Devils “intend” to make their move for the Portuguese international in the “coming weeks”.

There is no rush to table a proposal for Fernandes as it is believed that his “first pick” would be to sign for the Red Devils.

The likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also been mentioned as potential suitors for the 21-year-old.

How much would Fernandes cost?

Before the Hammers’ relegation, it was reported that the London club would hold out for a fee in the region of £80m for the midfielder.

However, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side now needing to raise significant funds to fill a gaping hole in their finances, a bid in the region of £50m to £60m could be accepted.

It would still be a sizeable increase on the £42m that Fernandes was signed for last year, but it is a much more reasonable fee compared to other leading targets such as Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.

Man Utd could sign 3 midfielders

A significant overhaul in the middle of the park is on the cards. In addition to Fernandes, Atalanta’s Ederson appears to be another likely recruit.

There are still conflicting claims over how close the Red Devils are to securing the Brazilian’s signature. The latest reports suggest that an initial fee of £35m has been agreed, with £3m in add-ons.

The I Paper report that, even if Ederson and Fernandes are brought in, a third midfielder could be recruited, and that seems perfectly feasible if the £150m figure budgeted for reinforcing the midfield department is accurate.
