Chelsea have finally found their solution to the long throw-in revolution in time for Xabi Alonso

Chelsea suffered greatly at the hands of the return of the long throw-in in the Premier League this season, but Geovany Quenda can now offer them their own weapon at last.

The Blues were seconds away from going top of the Premier League in the middle of September when they led Brentford, but were pegged back after failing to deal with a long throw.

Twice against Bournemouth, Chelsea conceded from long throw-ins during another 2-2 draw, while the coaching staff frantically searched for answers on the fly.

Geovany Quenda can finally give Chelsea a long throw-in specialist

While Chelsea continued to get stung by their inability to defend them, they were also one of the only clubs in the Premier League who didn’t have the weapon available to themselves.

Marc Cucurella, Reece James and Malo Gusto all didn’t seem to have the long throw in their lockers, but incoming star Geovany Quenda has proven he does.

In the recent cup final defeat to Torreense, Sporting subbed on Quenda before extra-time to push for a winning goal.

During this time on the pitch, the youngster was utilised to put long throws into the box, one of which going into the six-yard box and nearly leading to a goal.

Quenda is expected to stay at Stamford Bridge next season and work under Xabi Alonso next season, giving Chelsea this newly-found weapon in their arsenal.

Chelsea would really benefit from a long-throw specialist

Only three Premier League teams scored more goals from set-pieces than Chelsea this season, suggesting they are strong in the opposition’s penalty area.

However, they have been limiting their ability to utilise this by not setting up long throws throughout the season.

Quenda’s brilliance on the ball would already be enough for him to remain with the squad next season, but having this extra arrow in his quiver will be a huge boost too.

The Premier League is heading towards an era where set-pieces are more important than ever, and Alonso would benefit from this as he prepares for his first season of managing in England.
