Newcastle United have agreed a £69.3million sale with Barcelona for Anthony Gordon after a day of talks with the La Liga giants.
The Magpies actually received TWO bids today from both Barca and Bayern Munich, but the German side left the room after failing to match the Nou Camp side's offer. Gordon had already said goodbye to his team-mates and coaching staff and will now double his weekly wage to around £300,000 per week.
He will head to Spain to complete a medical and the usual formalities before later being presented as Barca's next big star.
It is believed that a structured offer from Barcelona is worth more than €80m (£69.3m) with add-ons while Bayern bid slightly less. The Bundesliga giants are well known for leaving the room once they feel they aren't getting value for money. That was the case last summer when Bayern dropped out of the hunt for Nick Woltemade at £69million and he signed for the Magpies instead and it has proved to be the same again for a big sale for Newcastle.
Gordon's future has been shrouded in doubt for the last two months, with the 24-year-old not kicking a ball since the 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace back in April. Since then, Gordon has missed a couple of games with a hip injury and was an unused substitute for the final handful of Premier League matches of the season as Newcastle looked to preserve the star.
Significantly for Newcastle, it will give them the cash injection needed to help ease through the SCR rulebook and allow them to start shopping. Gordon may not be the only big name to leave, with Sandro Tonali also attracting interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.
Howe had said last week: "It’s a difficult one for me to comment on, in terms of how he should be remembered, because that's us almost saying that he is going, and there's no guarantee.
"We don't know at this moment whether it will be his last game. Obviously, I've picked a team, as I've said many times, that in the last few weeks has been performing well.
"Anthony's come back from injury. He's been great around the group. He's been absolutely part of the team, so there have been no issues. Let's see what happens.
"The right time to give an answer to that question would be if he does leave, and then I'll obviously discuss that with you."
Gordon almost left Newcastle in 2024 when the club were up against it with PSR rules and faced a points deduction, and Liverpool came close to signing him. That deal fell through, but Gordon said last August: "It was difficult for me because one, I had the Euros, which was horrendous for me mentally. I was there, I wasn’t playing.
"Then I had the transfer stuff. With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window.
“It didn’t happen. I had to get my head around that to begin with, and then to get my head around it again was hard. I’m a human-being."
The Reds have also had a long-term interest in Gordon but did not get involved in a bidding war this time. After Bayern dropped out it left Barcelona firmly in the driving seat and he will now link up with England for the World Cup as a La Liga star.
