The Toffees inserted a sell-on clause when they sold Gordon to the Magpies for £45million in January 2023.

Three-and-half-years later and they are set to see the fruits of that, with Gordon due to undergo his medical in Barcelona on Thursday ahead of completing his big-money move.

For several weeks, Bayern Munich looked to be Gordon’s most likely destination after the player agreed to a move, however, what the Bundesliga champions were willing to pay fell short of Newcastle’s valuation.

Barca have managed to swoop in and agree a €80million fee, which is around £69.3million, after talks progressed rapidly on Wednesday.

Newcastle United to lose millions after Everton clause

It’s understood Everton are entitled to 15% of any profit Newcastle make.

So, £69million subtract the £45m Eddie Howe’s side paid for Gordon works out at a £24million. Take 15% off that and the Toffees are set to bank around £3.6m, meaning the Magpies walk away with a slightly smaller profit of £20.4million.

After needing the first six months to acclimatise to life under Eddie Howe, Gordon was excellent during his full first season at Newcastle, deservedly winning the club’s Player of the Year award.

In total, Gordon made 152 appearances and scored 39 goals, 10 of which came in this season’s Champions League.

Gordon didn’t play in any of Newcastle’s remaining six games, missing AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal with a hip injury before being an unused substitute against Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Fulham.

Howe admitted that Gordon’s omission was with a “partial view on the future.”
