This summer is going to be as much about signing the right players as it will be about moving on from certain current ones. It remains to be seen who will end up leaving Chelsea in this upcoming transfer window. But considering the club’s recent performances and results, it should not have a major impact in most cases.
Chelsea have signed plenty of talented players in recent times. But not everybody has been able to deliver on the pitch, for one reason or another.
Well, the reason is very clear when it comes to someone like Romeo Lavia. He was signed for a transfer fee in the region of £60 million and has never really been fit for any consistent length of time over the past three seasons.
Now, it looks like Chelsea could be offered a chance to move on from the Belgian international midfielder. According to a report from Simon Phillips, AS Monaco set to offer £25m for Lavia.
AS Monaco are reportedly set to make offer to sign Romeo Lavia
Now, there is very little chance that Chelsea are going to be able to even get close to recouping what they shelled out to sign Lavia. But as far as offers for injury-prone midfielders who rarely are available goes, that is a pretty decent one.
Do not get me wrong, I have no doubt about Lavia’s talent. But at some point, availability becomes more important than quality.
Lavia has made only 43 appearances in a Chelsea shirt in his three full seasons with the club. And that has not been due to any doubts about his quality. On the contrary, people like Cole Palmer have continued to praise him as one of the best at the club when fully fit. Unfortunately, he simply is not available enough.
Should Chelsea let Lavia leave?
Lavia will never be a starter for Chelsea. At least not on a consistent basis, as an injury always seems to be around the corner. So, it is just right to move on, especially if a significant offer comes in.
If Lavia can go on to join AS Monaco and rediscover his fitness, then good for him. It simply never happened at Chelsea, and did not look like it was going to.
If both Enzo Fernandez and Lavia do end up leaving Chelsea this summer, then the club would need a bit of revamp in the middle of the park. So, let’s see how things play out. It is just as likely that both end up staying and not much changes in midfield.
