Kieran Morrison signs new Liverpool deal ahead of possible loan move

Northern Ireland teenager Kieran Morrison has committed his long-term future to Liverpool by putting pen to paper on a new four-year contract.

The 19-year-old versatile winger, who joined the Reds from Manchester United back in 2019 as an Under-14s player, has rapidly earned a reputation as one of the brightest sparks in the club’s academy.

His exceptional performances in the Premier League 2 (PL2) campaign earned him a nomination for the PL2 Player of the Season award, having netted 14 goals and registered vital assists across his 18 appearances.

Morrison’s stellar form also saw him captain the U21s for a period of the season under new manager Rob Page, whilst catching the eye of first-team boss Arne Slot. The youngster has already made two senior appearances for the Reds this season in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and has been named on the bench in the Premier League.

Reflecting on his progression, Morrison said:

“It’s been a massive improvement from last year. That was my goal this year – just to impact myself and PL2 as much as I can. I think I’ve done quite well. As a team, we wanted to get further in the play-offs but we’ve come a long way as a team, especially with Rob [Page], the new manager, and obviously me becoming captain during it.

“It just shows how much we’ve come [along] since the beginning of the season. So, I’m really proud of my performances and the team’s performances. I always set targets and this season I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot of my targets. So, hopefully next season goes just as well.”

Celebrating the announcement on Instagram, Morrison added:

“Alhamduililah, very happy to sign a new long-term contract. Only the beginning”.

A crucial summer ahead: Is a loan move on the cards?

With his previous contract set to expire next summer, Liverpool acted swiftly to secure Morrison’s future, especially after rebuffing interest from Wolves a year ago. However, with the first-team ranks heavily stocked, the immediate question for the teenager centers around securing regular senior minutes.

Liverpool’s first-team wings are highly competitive. The club are reportedly holding interest in Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola, while already boasting Cody Gakpo and rising star Rio Ngumoha—who signed from Chelsea in the summer of 2024 in the ranks.

Because of this, a loan move looks to be the most viable path forward, though Liverpool will need to choose his destination carefully.

The Reds had mixed success with U21 loanees during the 2025/26 campaign. Luca Stephenson excelled back at Scottish Premiership side Dundee United, and Lewis Koumas secured promotion to the Premier League with Hull City after a tough stint at Birmingham City.

However, temporary spells for Luke Chambers, Owen Beck, and James McConnell (who spent time at Ajax) yielded fewer signs of an immediate first-team breakthrough under Slot.

Morrison’s rise comes at a time when Liverpool’s academy recruitment is looking its strongest in years. Ever since Trent Alexander-Arnold paved the way, supporters have regularly caught glimpses of elite youth talent.

Alongside Ngumoha, midfielder Trey Nyoni has featured a handful of times as a Premier League substitute.

The club is also aggressively recruiting globally and domestically. January arrival Mor Talla Ndiaye has already earned a spot in a senior matchday squad, while 16-year-old Senegalese youth international Sidy Barhama Ndiaye has been secured for when he turns 18.

Down in the U18s, 15-year-old winger Joshua Abe has enjoyed a spectacular season, though the Reds face a battle to keep him amid heavy interest from Manchester City.

This hyper-competitive environment at the AXA Training Centre will undoubtedly push Morrison to make his next development step immediate.

Securing Morrison on a four-year deal is fantastic business for Liverpool. He has completely torn up the PL2 this season, and his 14-goal output from the wing shows he has far outgrown youth football.

However, the hard part starts now. With Slot’s first team chasing elite targets like Barcola and Diomande, Morrison is highly unlikely to get the Premier League minutes he needs at Anfield next season.

The club must prioritise finding him a high-level Championship or European loan where he can play week in, week out. He clearly has the tactical versatility and technical skillset to make it at the top level now he just needs the platform to prove it against men.
